#NLEATSROADTRIP

With summer’s arrival we have put together an opportunity to celebrate all that is local! We have brought together a remarkable network of local businesses and tourism operators in the province. By showcasing the best of what Newfoundland has to offer, we strive to bring communities together. To continue reaching those in need and further our battle with food insecurity, we look to expand our operations to the Cornerbrook area.

Baccalieu Trail Honey and Bees

Baccalieu Trail Honey Bees

Working out of Carbonear, with bees located in communities along around the Baccalieu Trail, beekeeper Kim Dooley manages her small-scale operation with the love and support of her family. She collaborates with local farmers and community residents, who generously provide homes for her bee colonies in exchange for the gifts of pollination and honey. She says that customers always tell her how uniquely delicious NL honey is, and how honeybees are always welcome visitors in their gardens by virtue of pollinating their flowers. When health regulations allow, Kim loves hosting in-person beekeeping workshops and meeting up with other beekeepers to share ideas. She loves living in Carbonear , as it is a beautiful and scenic community with locally owned shop, boutiques and restaurants.

Campbellton Berry

Campbellton berry

Founded as a small strawberry u-pick operation by his parents 40 years ago, Andrew Thornley and his wife Victoria have expanded the family business into a a farm market that sells a wide variety of berries, fruits and vegetables. Ranging from gooseberries to pumpkins to asparagus, they not only sell their own products but those of local producers as well. They seek to provide a local, one-stop shopping experience for their customers, while also assisting local producers who have had difficulties in getting their products to consumers. Even though the COVID-19 pandemic affected their business, they were very grateful for the support of local tourists which helped them make it through such a difficult period. They are proud to call Notre Dame Bay home, and believe it is one of the most beautiful places in Newfoundland with a strong sense of community and togetherness.

Gillis naturals

Originally hailing from Ontario, Stephanie Lipp and Leo Gillis moved to Bonavista to establish a gourmet mushroom farm and secondary processing facility beside the ocean. They are passionate about local cuisine and nutrition, and are excited to do their part to strengthen food security on the island. Many people find it fascinating to learn how mushrooms are grown and about the many health benefits of including them in a balanced diet. While Gillis Naturals was adversely impacted by the pandemic’s effect on local tourism, Stephanie and Leo were grateful to be able to participate in the Clarenville Farm & Market and to successfully launch their gourmet mushroom subscription service on the peninsula. They love that Bonavista has been renewed through the diverse entrepreneurs who now reside there, who are rebuilding a unique cultural tapestry against a breathtaking coastal landscape.

Knots By April

knots by april

Knots by April was established back in November 2020. What originally started as a hobby has since turned into something much more. I went from making a couple dozen keychains a week, to selling fibre art for people to hang in their homes. My inventory includes keychains, collars and leashes, plant hangers, wall hangings, and textile fibre hoops. I use 100% recycled cotton cord for my fibre art and I try to be as low waste as possible. Everything that I’ve made has been created by custom request and I hope to eventually have my own website where I can sell and showcase my work. I’m so excited for the future of Knots and I can’t wait to see where I’ll be in November 2021.
